Age of Empires III is the perfect example of how rapidly progressing an adored franchise can end up doing more harm than good. The developer innovated the game so much that it became a shell of its former self. Age of Empires III is still an amazing RTS that deserves its place in history it just wasn't what fans expected from the legendary series.
